Donate to Save a Life: Celebrate National Donate Life Month

It is possible to save more than 20 people’s lives, just by becoming an organ donor. Medical Department Store appreciates your attention to this issue, and encourages you to consider you decision.

More than 120,000 men, women, and children are currently on the waiting list for organ transplants in the United States. This comprehensive list also includes the 67,000 multicultural patients and 2,000 pediatric patients who are waiting for the right match.

First, to debunk some common myths, anyone can be a potential donor, regardless of age, race, or medical history. There is no cutoff age for donating organs. Doctors choose whether or not to use organs based on strict medical criteria so don’t count yourself out! Let your doctors decided whether your organs and tissues are suitable for donation.

Another common misconception is that people who have certain medical conditions are not able to donate their organs. Doctors may still be able to use certain organs and tissues for transplant. Don’t prematurely dismiss the contribution you could potentially make.

Some people believe that their families will be charged if they choose to donate their organs, adding additional bills their relatives must cover. This misconception is false. The family of the organ donor is never charged. Any tests doctors may perform to determine the suitability of organs is covered by the hospital, and the cost for organ removal is assigned to the family of the recipient.

Now that you have the facts, Medical Department Store encourages you to become an organ donor and make a difference in the lives of many potential recipients. If you identify with an ethnic minority, it is especially important that you consider becoming an organ donor. African-Americans, Asians, Pacific Islanders, Native Americans, and Hispanics have an increased likelihood of being diagnosed with a chronic condition that is more prevalent in minorities.
